NEGATIVE PRESSURE STRETCHER

A biological isolation chamber (BIC) is a portable, sealed unit with a negative pressure system and HEPA filters, designed to safely contain and transport highly infectious patients or hazardous biological materials, preventing pathogen spread to the environment or staff by filtering contaminated air and maintaining lower internal pressure. It acts like a mobile, high-tech containment bubble, often featuring glove ports for access and a structure that fits over stretchers for easy movement in emergency or clinical settings, crucial during outbreaks like COVID-19
NEGATIVE Pressure chamber
  1. The chamber liner is made from a special TPU film and strengthened by inserting aluminum rod along each side of the structure.
  2. The “all around” zipper system allows for the chamber to open completely in order for easy operation.
  3. The chamber has 10 integrated glove portals on three sides to allow for easy access to the patient and 2 utility portals used for infusions and other medical equipment.
  4. Belt system enables the patient to be fastened while in the chamber or the chamber is securely fastened to a stretcher or bed.
  5. lsolation chamber is a fully collapsible unit that requires minimal storage space and is ready for use within minutes.
  6. The chamber must be used with a folding stretcher or stretcher tolley, which will be easy to move the patient.

Salient features & Function

  • Negative Pressure: Air flows into the chamber and is then filtered, preventing germs from escaping. The chamber maintains a negative pressure environment (often reaching -15 Pa within two minutes), ensuring that contaminated air cannot leak out.

  • HEPA Filtration: Removes over 99.999% of airborne particles, including viruses, from exhaust air. It uses high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters (typically 99.99% to 99.999% efficiency for 0.3μm particles) to purify the air before it is exhausted or supplemented back into the chamber.

  • Portable & Collapsible: Made from durable, lightweight materials (like TPU film) with aluminum supports, allowing quick setup for transport.

  • Integrated Access Portals / Glove Ports: Allows medical personnel to interact with the patient (e.g., for infusions, examinations) without breaking containment. Most chambers feature multiple integrated glove portals (often 10) on the sides, allowing healthcare workers to perform nursing tasks and medical procedures without breaking the seal.

  • Utility Ports: Specialized ports allow for the insertion of IV infusions, oxygen lines, and other medical equipment.

  • Portability: These units are typically made of durable, transparent materials like TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) and are designed to be fully collapsible and easily mounted onto a standard medical stretcher.

  • Safety Alarms: Many models include audio and visual alarms that trigger if the internal negative pressure falls or if the battery power is low.

Applications

  • Inpatient Transport: Used in hospitals, emergency centers, and infectious disease clinics to move patients between departments or facilities
  • Public Health Protection: Employed at airports, docks, and stations to isolate individuals suspected of carrying deadly respiratory viruses like SARS or COVID-19.
  • Research: Smaller versions exist for research purposes, such as the XIC-3 Animal Isolation Chamber, which isolates anesthetized mice or rats during imagin
